WELLINGTON ITEMS.
[From Our CorreSh-oxdient.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 20. Some time ago an inquiry was held into the charges preferred against Sergeant Griffiths, of Dunedin, which led to his d'isratement to the position of first-class constable. Friends came to the rescue and endeavoured to stir up an agitation in favour of the disrated officer in the columns of the Dunedin daily Press. Influence was also brought to beai 1 on certain Parliamentary representatives, by whom representations were made to the Minister of Justice for a Magisterial rehearing of the case. After going very carefully into the matter the Minister expressed himself as quite satisfied that there was absolutely nothing to warrant him in acceding to th* request of the petitioners, and, further, he expressed himself as perfectly satisfied that 'the decision of Commissioner Tunbridge was a) just one. It is understood that in his reply the Minister spoke very plainly concerning the absurd misrepresentai'iona of the friends of Constable Griffiths.
