Mi 1 J. T. M. Hayhurs,t, Temuka, Mr G. Lning-Meason, Tiimaru, and Mr James Gray. Dunedin 1 , were passengers by the express for tho south to-day. The- passengers for Hanmer Springs by the north train to-day were : — Mr .Whitehouse, Wellington, and Miss G. Sim and Miss D. JJabar, Rangiora.
A tdegfam from Invercargill stales that Mr J. P. Joyce, editor of the "Southland News" fp. forty years, and formerly representative of the Wallace and Awarua electorates ih Parliament, died suddenly this morning front heart disease. He was at Ballarat and Bendigo in the early days ff the \disrglngSj and arrived in Southland -bout 1857.
A rather good story is -told aboht Dr Pomare, the Native health oiheer, who, though a full-blooded Maori, is no mean scholiiy and has travelled to nearly every nooltN and corner of the Continent and America. The steward collapsed amid profuse apologies, and tlie joke was much enjoyed by a number of jietjjile who iVete iii the saloon at the time.
