• ' ■"-" — ♦ * The ordinary monthly .meeting of the Lyttelton narbour 'Board was ifield this afternoon ; jpresent-^Msssra A. Ka.ye -(chair man), W. Dunlop, J. Lambie, J. M'Clatchie, J. Connal, I. G-ifebs, F. Graham, D.. fcuddo, F. Waymouth, 4R.. Pitcaithly, GI^aurenson,- J. Brown, J. Grubb and J. I ilennie. The chairman delivered his usual monthly report as follows:— "I am cure members •will join with me "in expressing their sincere regret on the death of Mr A. U. Mlntyre, -who was in charge of our Stores Deportment for. the past seventeen years,.- and ; I will move at a later stage tk.at a letter ;of sympathy ibe sent to tMrs MTntyre, The .works -which the Board have in hand! have progressed satisfactorily during the past i month. i>*o. 2 Jetty Extension should be i completed and ready for use within the next three weeks. The Cool Store additions should also be finished in about a fortnight, and the Whar.f Labourers' 'Shelter Shed should be ready for occupation next month, also the Night-watchman's Lodge - Our dredging operations outside the moles have been proceeding without interruption during the month of September; 54,000 tons of mud were dredged, and this ! month; up to to-day over 63,000 tons ■ have been removed: This is a record month's work so far as our dredgin-g ojperaK i tioris in Lyttelton are concerned. . Portaiß.'the sup?r- --< intendent of dredging in New South Waljsw, and other dredging experts at, Adelaide, Newcastle, Brisbane and M*l&6umfr, and! was informed by them. that tfoty calculated their dredging work by the tonnage of mud or sand carried in tie Hopper dredges or 1 barges, making ntt . allowance for any per-cent-age qf water. Our dredging workLytteltda has hitherto been calculated in' a similar nianner. This extension of No. 6 jetty will be put in hand as Soon a? possible* after the completion of No. 2 jetty, also the re-decking of a portion of the How level breastwork, and t!he 'short jetty.' The following amounts have been; paid iw to the Board's account since our last meeting:-— Wharfage £1928 14s 10d, pilotage and port charges £1150 0s 6d, towage, storage, etc £514 19s lOd, making a total of £3595 15» 2d, as against £2883 9s 3d for the corresponding period last year. No. 1 current account is in credit £11914 13s 8d ; No. 2. current account is in debit £1517 0s 5d and we have £17,000 on fixed d«p««t, and also £5543 11s 8d renewal fund on fixed deposit. I have to accord my special thank* tc- Mr T. Waymouth for kindly undertaking the duties "of the chairmanship during my •absence for a portron of this month. ' On the motion of the Chairman, the Board- expressed its regret at the death of Mr M'lntyxe, and it was resolved to forward a letter of condolence to Mrs Mintvre on her bereavement. A Teport wa« read from the harbourmaster in connection with the fouling of the Faparoa- with the dredge moorings, stating that th& steamer overran her distance and her yanohor picked up the dredge's moorings. The Board resolved to write to the New Zealand Shipping Company expressing regret at the occurrence and at the delay caused to the steamer thereby. The harbour-master also reported as to the accident to the Rimutaka, which was caused by her propeller striking a. pile at No. 7 wharf. He considered that the accident was entirely due to a strong wind setting the steamer on to the wharf. A reptct was received from tie. engineer of the tug Lyttelton, stating' that the new boilers were ■unsatisfactory, and that the cylinders required looking to. He ! suggested that Mr G. Croll should be. afrked to report on the boilers and engine*, and this was agreed to by the Board. It was resolved: to procure six more Crompton electric lights for the. wharves. With regard to additions to the cool chambers at Lyttelton, and Mr F. Strouts' report thereon, it was decided to have the alterations carried' out on the lines suggested. (Left sitting.)
