VICTORIA PARK.
The proposal to re-plant Victoria Park promises to develop into a. movement worthy of so deserving an object. The interest of the Caslimere Hills Domain Board in the project has been evoked, three local bodies have, promised- assistance, and tho Christ-church Beautifying Association! and several prominent privafte individuals J are lending their aid. Among the last- | named is Sir John Hal!, who has come forj ward with a practical offer in the shape of 2000 trees. This is a, liberal donation indeed, and we hope tthai? Sirt i? Sir John's good example will be followed by others who have the means and the inclination to help. But before the promoters proceed any further with the task of planting fresh trees ; we hope they will make an attempt to con- ! serve those already there. Many of the trees which were planted to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria are dead. Some are still alive, however, and with a iittle care and attention might be nursed into maturity. But they need tha,c care, and unless they receive it they will, we fear, follow the example of their companions, which shrivelled soon after they were planted. The Cashmere Hills Domain Board has promised that the Park shall be put in order, and if it redeems its promise, the Beautifying Association and tho other bodies who arc interesting themselves in the matter will have a clear field to begin the work of replanting. ■. !
