~T —^— ♦ AN ENGtaSfl CHAMPIONSHtt; United Press Assotf»ttoa--By Elefctti* Telegf&pfa.— Copyright. (Received August H, 9.31 SltA.) August & CaviU -won. the Half-mile Cheun^oiuihip at Norwood Lake, in. llmin. SO 2-seee, a T&cord. Hie second man (name omitted), took 2 3-Ssec longer, and Bead, of Sydney* finished third, in> l2min 56sec. (R. CavilTs time is , Considerably fastef than that of any other swimmer over half a mile. When he won tto Hall* mile Championship of Australasia, at Wan" ganui, on Feb. 24, he was credited "with having covered the distance in llmin Ssec, but as it was so considerably in advanoe of existing records the accuracy of the time was doubted. In view of this latest per* | f ormance, in a much longer bath, and probably colder water, the Wangantti record will receive acceptance in many quarters. The official world's record, of 12min £9sec* stands to the credit of J. A. Jarvis,- the English champion, but just "before the last mail left that swimmer covered the distance, over a course lib yards long, in 12 mm 23seo, and it was anticipated that, everything being in order, the new tinifc would be accepted as a record. If this were so, Cavill's new ' tune would still be 33 2-ssec better than the previous best.)
