When the fire broke out the convicts were locked in 4 and a terrible scene ensued wnfejL they threw themselves against the iron dWs, screaming for mercy and cursing the gaolers. A force of soldiers arrived and 1 the doors were then unlocked. • Six hundred prisoners immediately rushed 1 out and 1 endeavoured to break away to Jiberty, but they were faced i by lines of troops with fixed bayonets and were thus Jcept from escaping. '
