OBITUARY.

THE DUCHESS OF ATHOLL. United Press Association — By Electrio Telegraph — Copyright. (Received July 11, 9.24 a.m.) .LONDON, July 10. The death is announced of the IJuchess of Atholl. •DR TOWNEND. The many friends of Dr Joseph Henry Townend, who has been seriously ill for some time, will regret to hear that he died at his residence, Park Terrace, at a late hour last night. The late Dr Townend was a* L.R.C.P. (Edinburgh), and L.S. A. (London). He. studied at Guy's Hospital, in London, Tand took his degrees in 1872. Early in 1876 he. came out to Lvttelton as medical officer on an immigrant ship,, and shortly afterwards started practice in Christchurch, and remained in active work until a few months ago, when he sold his practice to Dr Patterson, of Dunedin, and retired. Vox close upon twelve years he was one of the honorary physicians to the Christchurch Hospital, and eventually he was elected honorary physician for life. Shortly after Dr Townend arrived in Christchurch he married: His first wife died in 1893, leaving three sons and four daughters. The three sons are still in Christchurch. The eldest daughter is t now the Countess of Seafield, and the second is in England with the Countess, and is engaged to the Hon Trevor Grant, a brother of the Earl of Seafield. Dr Townend married again in September, ISOO, his second wife, who survives him, being the daughter of Mr G. H. Moore, of Glenmark.
