■♦ ' I (For the "Star," by "Pakeha.") j . I Welded by Anvil-strokes of Fate, Braced by invigorating war, Earth's greatest Empire lifts in State The Sceptre of her rule afar. The rolling globe shows to the sun, Stretching across the farthest lands, A Line of Nations knit as one By thrice-wove bands. Nations of learning and of skill, Strong crescent Nations, fiercely free^. Who to no earthly despot's will Would 1 bend the knee. ' I 11. That Empire with one heart alone, • One will — one voice— in loyalty deep, Gives Edward, on Victoria's throne, Her bright Crown, spotless still to keep. Though spared the actual grasp of State, His Trust is solemn and immense, j Fcr Purity and Cleanness wait His influence. And when he kneels that Trust to 'bear, ' j Beneath the Priest's anointing hand, ! He needs the heartfelt faithful prayer j Of all his land. j "* ' ' m. • | Oh, Spirits of our Mighty Dead, Who through stern days of stormy fight Have for tthatt t Sceptre toiled and bled, Attend amd sanctify this rite! Oh, Dear Dead Queen, whose glorious throne Was wrought upon thy People's love Look on the harvest Thou has sown, " Look from above. And when he feels the circling band That stamps him Monarch of the Free, On him thy unseen, loving hand. Lay strength'ningly ! IV. v " Oh, Lord Almighty— King of Kings, With humbled heads to Thee we pray. Cleanse Thou the pride that power brings, By fire — if such must be Thy way. Grant to our growing Nations all, Bound though divided by Thy foam, Humility— lest yet they fall ' Like Greece and Rome. May their sole fear be Thy dread froAvn, Their shield the cover of Thy Wing. Great God! defend our Flag and Crown. God Save our King.
