WHAT THE OLD LADY WANTED.
One day an innocent-minded old lady, travelling by rail, noticed for the first time the alarm cord running outside the carriage. She asked a newsboy^what it was for. The boy, with a merry twinkle in his eye, told her the cord was for refreshments. A short _■'■■*. time after, feeling out of sorts, the old lady gave the cord one or two vigorous pulls, which immediately brought the train to a standstill. The passengers soon became in a state of terrible confusion/, while the guard and others were running from one carriage to another until they got to the one occupied by the old lady/ and breathlessly asked: "Who pulled tbe cord?" "I did," said the old lady. "Well, what on earth do you want?" "A bottle of ginger-beer andl a biscuit," .'..*"•■;
