MR RHODES'S SCHCOLARSHIPS.

Mr Cecil Rhodes's trustee, desire that ' colonial scholars shall go into residence in October, 1903. (Mr Rhodes in his .will conferred tha '• following endowments: — Sixty, colonial J scholarships at Oxford Uruvewtt^ twenty to be filled annually, of a yearly value, of . £300, tenable for three years by male _ttt*N dents; namely, three from Rhodesia, one each from the South African Stellenbosch and Rondebosch Diocesan schools and Sfc, Andrew's and Grahamstown College schools, . one each. from Natal, New South Wale-,, y Victoria, South Australia, Queen-land,' ' West Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec, Bermuda* and Jamaica. Two similar scholarships, - one filled yearly, to each of the forty-^ya States and Seven territories of the'tTnited States, and fifteen similar scholarships, of a value of £250 per annum, for German etu- -' dents nominated 'by the Kaiser in yrecpg- :". > nition of the promotion of the study of-'' English in Germany. The scholarships are free from any religious or racial test. Thirty points per cent must be awarded; for literary and scholastic attainments and r twenty for sports. The schoolmates of the. -yy. successful candidates are to ballot thirty points for qualities of manhood,' truth and courage, and there must be a similar ballot^ ■;. giving twenty points for qualities of moral ' force and character, based on the report of the of the ischool.
