According to the promise mad© by the Minister of Railways that the time taken by the express trains to and from (Duneaiß should be materially reduced, arrangement* have now been made for the change, which, will be a welcome one to travellers, to com* into effect on July 1. The timei will bft shortened by three-quarters of an 'hour. This will be "effected by reducing the stoppage at Timaru on the down train ; «°*° twenty minutes to eight minutes, -^hile. the delay at Oamaru in the up train will be reduced in V similar manner. The balance of the time will be reduced by tile intaro-: duction of the Westingbouse brake on all i the carriages, which will allow- the train to be pulled up at stopping places in its own length without reducing the speed. The trains wiU leave both Ghristchurci /. and Dunedih at 11 a.m., as now, and tfilt v arrive at their destinations at 8:1?. P-m. instead of nine o'clock. The I>unedin express will leave Christcburch for Lyttelton at 8.35 p.m. instead of 9.15 as at present Of course several minor alteration*, wilt have to be mada in oijher trains and on branch lines to fit in with the ranning of , the express. • . » The express train which left C?hnstchuroJ for the sauth ihis morning was fittto , throughout with the Westinghouse PT***, f and it wU continue to use that appliance for the remainder of the month, m order that the officials may become thorougWy acquainted with the working of the brake. The train was a few minutes late in leaving Christchurch this morning, as tn« brakes had to be examined and tested.
