p» ♦ CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, Mat 8. (Before Mr W. Prudhoe, J.P., Mr W. E. Saunders, J.P., and Mr J. Richardson, . J.P.) fined 5s and' costs t in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. False Pretences.— Denis Patrick Mahoney pleaded guilty to a charge of imposing upon one Charles Alfred Hewett by means of a certain false -pretence. It appeared that on "May 3 accused tried to -borrow the sum of 7s from Hewett, a cabman, offering as security a ring that he was wearing. The false pretence was that he represented the ring to^be gold, when it was only brass. A sentence of one month's im--prisonment was imposed. Assaulting a Bot.— Thomas Biunden pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a small boy named Leonard Burke yesterday. It appeared that the boy was passing along Beath and Co.'s right-of-way about 5.30 p.m.,. when accused, who was collecting old iron, called him and asked for the loan of a knife. According to accused's version, the boy answered saucily that the hadn't a knife, and accused playfully struck him with his open hand/ He stated that he was under the influence of liquor at the time. The Bench imposed a fine of 10s and costs. (Before Mr R. Beetham, S.M.) Civil Cases. — In the following cases the defendants failed to appear, and judgment for" the amounts claimed, with costs, was given for the plaintiffs : — Christchurch City Council v. W. G. Canson, claim £3 6s ; Waimea Creek Gold Dredging Company (Mr Franks) v. William M.^Cook, £30; same v. Morgan Evans, £10 ; same v. T. A. Garratt, £10; same v. George R. Joss, £6 ; Canterbury Auctioneering Company v. George Bone, £4 10s ; T. Taylor v. F. C. Aldridge, £5 17s sd ; John Drapper (Mr Brown) v. George Bone; £7 ss ; Canterbury Auctioneering Company v. C. E. Hoddinott, '£1 14s 6d ; James Palmer (Mr Beswick) v. Sarah Mulhern, £12 8s sd; the School Commissioners for Canterbury (Mr Beswick) v. Philip E. Thoreau, £18 14s ; New Zealand Express Company (Mr Widdowson) v. George Bone, £18 6s 9d. The Sale of Two Pigs.— Ann Jane Vidulick (Mr Hoban) sued H. Matson and Co. (Mr Russell) for £4 15s. The claim was for the value of two pigs consigned by Mrs Vidulick to the defendant company for sale at Addington on July 31 of laftt year. The pigs were received at Addington and sold, but when plaintiff went to get her account sales she was surprised to hear that the pigs were sold for 18s 6d each. She stated that one of the pigs was a baconer of about 2401 b. in weight and the other a porker of about 751 b to 801 b weight. They were worth much more than 18s 6d each. The defence was that the pigs received by the defendant from Lyttelton were only small stores, and neither prime baconers nor prime porkers. His Worship, after hearing several witnesses, gave judgment for defendant with costs.
