He was cutting^, totara tree, which sprang bask on him, pinning him to the ground. Bis mates had to dig him out with a spade. They carried him on a stretcher thirteen miles. He was, very cheerful during the early part of tbe journey, but died on the way, after showing remarkable stoicism. The calf of his leg was torn off, and he sustained severe internal injuries.
