CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, Feb. 26. (Before Mr B. P. Manhi're, J.P., and Mr J. Beresford, J.P.) DRTrNkENNESS.T-James Lynch, John Isherwood, and John Newton, were each fined ss -and costs, in •default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. — Robert M'Nab was fined 10s and costs, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment ; and Maude Hamilton, alias Brooks, w§s convicted and discharged, on the understanding that she went to thX^ Samaritan Home. Alleged Assatjlt. — Robert M'Nab and John Isherwood were- charged with assaulting James Smitbain, on the South Town Belt, on Feb. 25. The complainant, a boarding-house keeper, stated that the two accused were at his house, on Feb. 25, between 6 p.m., and 7 p,m., both the worse for drink. When he requested them to leave, M'Nab assaulted him. He had no complaint against Isherwood. M'Nab admitted the offence, and was fined 20s and costs, and ordered to pay for the damage he had caused. Isherwood was discharged. Larceny. — Thomas James Sutton was charged with the theft of a number of small articles, valued at 11s, the property of George William Staniland, of Flemington. Mr Hoban appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. He asked that his client might be treated leniently. He had undoubtedly done wrong, but for some time past had kept straight, and was anxious to have another chance. After hearing the evidence of Mr Staniland, their Worships sentenced the accused to one month's imprisonment. By-law Cases. — James le Sueur was charged with riding a bicycle on the footpath at Riccarton, on Feb. 6, in such a way as to obstrlict the- traffic. The only witness called failed to identify the defendant, and the case was dismissed. — Elizabeth Hegarty was charged with permitting fifteen cattle to graze on Hill's Road, on Feb. 6. A fine of 10s and costs was inftycted. — Abraham Jackson and John Patrick were charged "wifcli discharging a revolver at New Brighton, oh Feb. 9, contrary to the Borough by-laws. The men had gone down to the beach on the date named to indulge in revolver practice, and were shooting into fche sea. They asserted that they were below high-water mark. The Bench fined' them each 5s and costs. * Alleged Insulting Language. — James Corbett was charged, on the information oi William Westaway, with using provoking and insulting language to him on Feb. 16, at Sockburn. The charge arose out of a quarrel between neighbours over the grazing Of a certain property. There had been an altercation between the parties, and it was alleged t&at Corbett had made use of bad language. After hearing a good deal of evidence, the Bench ordered the defendant to be bound over to keep the peace >for six months. Mr Cresswell appeared for the complainant, and Mr Fuller for the defendant.
