The City Council has so far received no information from the Government in answer to its application for a loan for the erection of abattoirs on the proposed site at Sockburn.. An interesting . ceremony took place at the . East Christchurch School yesterday morning, when a fine portrait of the late Mr SandsteLn was unveiled by the headmaster, in the presence of the teachers, elder scholars and comniittee. Mr S. Clarke, the present Chairman, referred to the valuable work done by the late Mr M. Sandstein during the fourteen years he had acted* as Chairman of Committee, «nd his remarks were endorsed by Messrs J. R. Brunt, J. T. Smith and M. Murphy, old members of the Committee, who had been closely associated with Mr Sandstein. The portrait was the gift of Mrs Sandsbein, and Mr Ernest Sandstein suitably responded to the hearty vote of thanks which was carried by the children. -
