AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.
SPEECH BY THE FiEI>ERAL COM- , MANDANT. THE FEDERAL PREMIER'S VIEWS. United Press Association — By Eiectrio Telegraph— Copyright. (Received Feb. 19, 10.4 a.an.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 19. General Hutton, the Federal Commandant, speaking at a dinner' given him by the, 'Federal Ministry, said th« defence of the 1 . Empire, and similarly cf Australia, could only be achieved by offensive .operations. In addition to a local defence force, they must have a field force available for military operations whenever it was required. He paid a high tribute to the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian troops, and expressed the belief that if Australia dcv cided to put into the field a force of, say, twenty thousand of such men, whether, for the protection of Australian soil or the defence of Australian interests elsewhere, such a force would' prove a controlling factor in any campaign. Mr 'Barton endorsed General Hutton's remarks with reference to the need for preparedness to send men and ships away to defend Australian interests. They must be prepared to take their share in all matters which affected the integrity of the Empire. By this he did not mean th-at they must be ready to jump into every war. •
