ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA.

NOTES ON YESTERDAY'S PLAY. , (Received Feb. 18, 10.4 a. m.) r SYDNEY, Feb. 18. The key-note of the collapse of the Englishmen was, of course, the dismissal of Maclaren and Hay ward for so few runs by the expellent bowling. This caused a funk. The scoring-board was a pathetic sight t<s see, seven excellent batsmen having been dismissed for such insignificant figures. The " Sydney Morning Herald" says the batsmen were nev«r comfortable, though the wicket was perfect. The success of the Australians was purely and simply a triumph of bowling. That hitherto valuable partnership, Maclaren and Hayward, was nipped in the bud, and with the fall of the former's wicket the whole side commenced scratching. It now looks as though the Australians are sure to win. There is, howeVer, yet time for the remainder of the visitors to set the home side a good number to obtain. The "Daily Telegraph" says the bowling of Noble and Sounders was very good, but it is doubtful whether it was g.ood enough to quite account for so thorough a batting, collapse. Things went the way of the Australians, for shifty strokes developed a knack of going to hand, and, excepting one difficult instance, no opportunities were injs&d. The batting failure emphasises the value of the Maclaren-Hnyward partnership. Not once during the ekven-a-side matches of the tour has the team put up a score of 300, unless these- two Have made a big start for the first wicket. TO-DAY'S PLAY.
