BOROUGH COUNCILS.

— ; — » NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the New Bf ighton Borough Council was held last evening ; present— the Mayor (Mr G. . M'lntyre) and Councillors W/. Edwards, 'W. Bellamy, G. Delamare, C. Foster, J. Glanville and H. R. Walker^ Apologies for absence werq received from Councillors Winny, Thomson and Wyatt. Correspondence w^as read from Mr C. Sullivan requesting the Council to make some improvements to Palmer's Road. The letter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Messrs Friedlander Bros, wrote offering ryegrass screenings for planting on the* sandhills. It was decided! to reply that the screenings were of no use to the Council. The Royal Humane Society of New Zealand wrote forwarding a letter of commendation which it requested) the Mayor to present to Mr A. H. Wyatt, who had some months ago rescued two children from a perilous position. The Mayor stated that he had complied with the request on the occasion of the opening ceremony in connection with the new Council Chambers. The Town Clerk reported that the receipts since the last meeting were £143 and that the debit balance was £144 JOs 7d. As the 10 per cent penalty on the current year's rates would became due and payable after Feb. > 20, the Town Clerk asked the Council to decide what action should be taken to collect the outstanding amounts, also those rates for 1900-1901 which still remained unpaid. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee. The report further , suggested that the Council should take into consideration the question of building a stable on the Council's section, and also the erection of the necessary fencing on the western boundary of the new Council Chamber. These matters the Works Committee was empowered to deal with. The Town Clerk, in conclusion, stated that the balance of £86 5s was d*ue on the Council Chamber contract, and the contractor asked for payment. The report was approved. The Town Clerk's action in effecting insurances on the Council's workmen and 1 the new Council Chamber was approved. A detailed Teport by the Foreman of Works of the various items of work attended to in th© borough since the previous meeting was adopted. The Works Committee was instructsd! to take steps to have all branches which overhang footpaths to the inconvenience of pedestrians cleared away. Councillor Walker gave notice of motion for ; oext meeting that the Council should in future assemble at 8 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. After passing accounts to the amount of £107 6s the Council rose.
