• ♦ - ' — ■ ■'"'■■■ ■ .. A feature in. the ceremony connected <with the hoisting of the New Zealand ensign at the Native school atWaimana/ Bay of Plenty, the other day, was unique. Most of the elder Maori men present had fought against the flag they were honouring. Te Whiu, who performed the ceremony, was one of Te Kboti's ablest generals, and bears the marks of three severe wounds received at the hands of h«r Majesty's troops. He fought from Galateai to Gisbofne, in all the leading engagements. In his speeoh, iie expressed his pleasure in hoisting the-sym-bol of unity of I^Bttj^n. and pakeha.
