THE CHEVIOT EARTHQUAKES.
REPORT OF THE GOVERNMENT GEOLOGIST. -; ' . [Per Prkss Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. , ~ Mr M'Kay, the Government Geologist, Jn' his report oii'th© Cheviot earthquakes, says that there are no means of safeguarding against the effects of earthquakes which may occur* in the- future, as it is quite uncertain what line of fault is next to be affected, and whether or not, as during the recent disturbances, ■•a. .new, line of fracture and upheaval is being formed. ,'His opinion is ttiat'tbere is a probability of a more frequent recurrence of greater violence in times to come, ,and also that the scene of the sbext tarthquake disturbance ■will be elsewhere than in the Cheviot district, and that as there had been no serious . disturbance of that part of the country fcr fifty years prior to November last, it is reasonable to conclude that a like period will pass before the district is again violently disturbed. Tbe report concludes thus r- 1 -" Though on this occasion something farther has been added to our information as. to the behaviour of earthquakes, and although they may ibe ' classifled and- some of their more proximal causes indicated, the earthquake as^a whole still remains a visitation and a mystery."
