FLOOD IN THE ASHLEY.

BRIDGE WORKS IN DANGER. As a result of the heavy rain last night the Ashley River rose rapidly abairt six o'clock this morning, and a strong stream forced its way through a weak spot in the traffic bridge protective works, and formed a large lake, banked 1 by the river training wall, from the traffic to the railway bridge, and the new embankment raised to replace fifteen spans of the railway bridge recently removed. Fears were entertained for the safety of the new work, but albout 9 a.m. the water forced a breach g, -chain in width in the training wall near the end of the bridge, andi relieved; the pressure. The water went through) with 1 a tremendous rush, and a gang of men with - a steam crane had to take prompt measures to prevent the approach to the bridge being scoured away. The water went over the south bank of the river into a gravel pit near the North Canterbury Agricultural a<nd Pastoral Association's Show Grounds, and washed; away a portion of the road. The flood quickly subsided, the water falling a focfc an hour. The rainfall registered at Ra.-ngi'ora. was three-quarters of an inch.
