A COURT SENSATION.
NON-APPEARANCE OF AN ACCUSED PERSON At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Dugald Patterson was charged that on or about Dec. 19, 1901, he did obtain from one Alfred Butcher a cheque for £12 10s by a certain false pretence, ■to wit, by representing' that he was authorised by the Leviathan Gold Dredging Company to collect application^ and deposits for preference shares in the company, with intent to defraud the saiid Alfred Butcher. The same accused was further charged that, having received the cheque for £12 10a, on terms requiring him to pay it to the Leviathan Company, he did fraudulently convert the same to his own use, and steal the same. j The accused did not appear* when this name was called, and Inspector Ellison stated that no news of his whereabouts had been received since Monday last. Mr Harvey appeared for the accused's surety, and asked whether it was necessary that the bail should 'bo estreated at once. His . A warrant was issued yesterday for the arrest of Ougald Patetson, who failed to appear to answer to his bail at Christchurch i to-day.
