Last nighit's down north, train brought to town the following Hammer Springs visitors: — Mr W. M'Kay, Mies Caibot, Mass A. R. Jo-hmston an/d Mr and Mrs Rouch, a ! ll of Ghristchiurcih. By this morning's Culverden train Mr C. Wilkie and Master E. Wilfc-'e, of Mosgiel, a.nd. Miss Burn, of Auckianld, were passengers for Hanmer Spi'imgs. Mr Sidney Weetman has resigned from the position, of Commissiomer of Crown Lands for Canterbury, which he has occupied for about five years. He has retired from the service of the Government, and intends to take \ip his residence in Auckland. The following motion was passed at the meeting of the Canterbury Land Board yesterday, on the motion of Mr A. C. Pringle, seconded by Mr J. Sealey : — "That, on the occasion of the retirement of Mr Sidney Weetman, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Canterbury district, the members of the Board desire to place on record their appreciation of 'the courteous manner displayed by him as chairman of tfee Board, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to him, with the Board's wishes for his future welfare."

ing- • The " Manawafcu Standard " is informed on reliable authority that Mr H. S. Fitzherbert will contest the Palmerston seat in the Liberal interest at the next election. Ten years have elapsed since Mr Fitzherbert sat in the House as a member for the Hutt. It is probable that Mr W> T. Wood will also be a candidate for the seat.
