A TASMANIAN CANAL

The Government of Tasmania has let a contract on. the plans and specifioatdons of Mr C. -Napier Bell, M. -Inst., C.E., to cut a ship canal through East Bay Neck. This will enable steamers sailing from Hobart to reach the north-east coast at Marda Island entirely through inland waters, thus saving about 100 miles of navigation round by the open sea.
