ATHLETIC.

AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. (Received Nov. 30, 9.34 a.m.) S.YDNEY. Not. 30. The team to represent New South Wales at the Australasian Athletic Championship Meeting at Auckland has been* completed by the addition of H. Henderson (sprinter), and A. L. M'Alirter (running high and broad jumps and pole vault). So far Victoria has chosen only two of tie deren men she intends bo send — G. A. Moir (sprinter) and C. H. Gardner (hurdles and broad jump). Queensland will send six, including G. Hawkes (hammer-throwing and weight-put-ting), Darcy Wentworth (440yds and 880yds and one-mile champion) and P. F. Oorrigan (walking). The New South Wales team, as now completed, consists of the following halfr dozen. men:— W. O'Reilly, hammer and shot | W. Lindsay, hurdles and broad jump ; S. W. York, mtip and three miles ; A. A. Oxlade, quarter and half-mile ; H. Henderson, sprints ; and A. L. ifAlister, higli and broad jumps and pole vault. The first-named four were selected some time ago, the remaining two places being filled ! after a. test meeting held a'bout a fort-flight 1 ago. At this fixture Henderson beat I Barker and' Middletoo over 100yds in 10 2 5 sec, and also defeated Barker over 220yds |in 22 7-10sec. M'Alister did no* compete i at the meeting, but he must have com© well out of the test high jump, which, was to have been held subsequent to the last mail leaving. It will be noticed that the team does not include a walker. In the ■ test walk, over a mile, J. Penny 'beat four i others, in 7inin 7 4-ssee, which jras evi~ dtmtly not considered good l .enough, in viesv 6F the fact that the team to be sent is rally a small one numerically. Of the »two Victorians who have been chosen up to the present, Moir has long been the recognised crack sprinter of his State, and at the recent Victoria'a Championship Meeting he won *fie 100yds. race in lOsec and the 220yds in 23sec. Gardner's performances show him to be a good man over hurdles, as he won the Victorian Championship in. 16 3-ssec. He was also second in the long jump, clearing 22ft l£in. According far latest advices tJhe, other members of the team will probably include JV. Shea, sprints ; H. H. Hunter, sprints, hurdles and broad jump ; E. W. Mitchell, quarter and half-mile; H. Sutton, mile; G. Blake, mile and three miles ; L. M. Mao pherson., hurdles and broad jump ; H. M'L. M'Duigan, high and broad jumps, amd R. Purbrick, walks. This is a good allround team, as, though it does not include a pole-vaulter or a hammer or shot exponent, it is strong in all other departments. At the Victorian Championship Meeting Shea finished third in the lOOydfe ant second in the 220yds; Mitchell won the quarter in 53 l-ssec and was second in the half-mile ; Sutton won the anile ; Blake won the three miles ; Macphersco won the quarter hurdles and was third in the 120yds hurdles ; M'Duigan won the high jump and was third in 'the broad jump; and Purbrick won the one and three-mile events. As to the Queensland representatives, the three men selected are all top-notchers. The remaining representatives will probably be a sprinter, another middle-distance runisot and a. second long-distance ma». This assumption, at any rate, may fairly be drawn from the decision of the Queensland authorities to hold a series of tests over distances from 100yds to three miles.
