Dr O. H. Schumacher, son of Mr N. C. Schumacher, of Lyttelton, has been appoint^ ed doctor of the s.s. Gothic, and left Lyttelton in that vessel to-day. The Revs F. Neild, W. Philip. J. Hayward. J. Elliott and M'Donald arrived from the north by the s.s. Tarawera this morning. Mr G. Laurenson, M.H.R., was a passenger by the same steamer. Sergeant -Major Rogers has (says the '* Auckland Herald ") been added to the permanent staff of the Auckland district at the request of Lieutenant-Colonel Davies, with a view to the improvement of the mounted branch of the service. SergeantMajor Rogers, who is an old army man. served with Colonel Davies during part of the South African war. Mr Arthur Hall, second son of Mr A. Hnll, manager of the Wellington City Tramways, who went to South Africa some time ago and enlisted in Brabant's Horse, is (says the "Post") at present in England, where he is acting as a recruiting sergeant.
