THE NEED FOR NEW MARKETS. [From Oxtr CoRREsroNDENT.] WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. During the discussion on the- Industries Department, Mr Laurenson submitted some interesting figures in empporb of his viewthat* th© colony's commerce mu-st* be made wider. To begin with, Australia has regular lines of steam communication with Manila, China, Japan, South Africa, India, Bremen, Marseilles, Dunkirk, Hamburg, Manchester and Hull. New Zealand, however, only communicates with. London. Victoria sends -butter to twenty ports outside the United Kingdom. New Zealaud to three only. Victoria ©ends frozen meat to three Asiatic ports, 'three African, two European, three North Amerioan and three in the United Kingdom., while the mieaifc of New Zealand goes nearly all to London. Victoria does business with nineteen ports outside the United Kingdom, New South Wales with seventeen, New Zealand with only nine. The percent-age of colonial export; business with London was last, year aa follows:— New Zealand 79 per cent, Victoria 30, New South, Wales 31 ; with Australia New Zealand 14 per cent, Victoria 28 per cent and New Souitih Wales 33 per cen)b; with South America, NewZealand 8, Victoria I£, and New South Wales 2 ; with, other British countries, Now Zealand 2, Victoria, 20, and New Souitih Wales 3£; with foreign countries, New Zealand 6, Victoria 20, New South Wales '30.
