The Hampstead Town Board has decided not to contribute to tji« cost- of ;a.. ns*r: clock for the tower of the Aahiburtou; Post Office. The question of forming a Town Band ■wiH be brought (before the Ash-buirton Borough Council by notice of motion on Monday night. On Thursday night the Rangi'ora Hockey Club hold! a very enjoyable social gathering. There was a large attendance, and. the committee's arrangements left nothing wanting to^end to the pleasure- of the company. A hack mare was run- into at Papanui lskt "night by the engine of the 9.30 p.m.tram from Cfhrafccihuroh. The animal was so badly injured that *he local constable had to call in a veterinary surgeon. It ■was then placed on a paddock to await discovery of its owner. At the' rooms of the Pioneer Amateur Bicycle and Athletic Club last night, the prizes in connection Vith the inter-club billiard tournament, which was held recently among the sports clubs of Christchurch, were presented. Mr J. Daniels (captain of. the Pioneer Club) presided. The prizes won in connection with the tournament were presented as follows: — Alcock Challenge Shield and Medals, Union Cycling Club team (Messrs R. Spencer, A. T. Washer, R. W. Barry, E. T. Scrimshaw and G. . Perkins) ; : chair, Pioneer Amateur Bicycle and Athletic Club ; medal (individual champion), Mr J. L. Carl; medal (runner up), Mr E. T. Scrimshaw. Among the toasts proposed were — Messrs Alcock and Co. and their Christchurch agents (Messrs Fletcher, Humphreys and Co.), Union Cycling Club, Pioneer Amateur Bicycle end Athletic Club, and Unsuccessful Competitors. During <tih<e evening a matoh wag played between the Union Cycling Club (winner of the tournament) and a combined team from the other four clubs which took part, the Union dub's representatives winning by 397 points to 265. The Ventura, with *he British maila of August 31, l«sffc San Francisco o-n Sept. 12, at 11 a.m., one hour late. The Pollard Opera Company arrived from Timaru by -the afternoon train to-day. They were met at the railway station by a 3arge number of <friends, who accorded them a (hearty welcome. The vacant plot of green by the hospital bridge has been, taken in hand by the Christchurch Bjeawtifying Society, and several flower beds have been arranged along the river ban-k. - The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society has decided to make a. charge of 5s to nonltcense ibaJdiers using the Society's paddock at the mouth of <tih.e Ashburton' Biver, die fee for livery stable keepers to be 10s. The near approach of the trout-fishing season is bringing many visitors along the river banks towards the upper reaches, intent on spotting good likely holes for fish. The forthcoming season promises to be a very successful one, and already "the retailers are doing a -brisk trade in fishing requisites. /^The hot north-westerly wind which prevailed last night aod to-fiay brought on the spring vegetation to a marked degree. Many, peach and apricot trees 'have burst into bloom, and the willows, which were showing just a tinge of green, are now bearing ihailf -developed foliage." Ashburton on Friday, and gave an exhibition of his ekill in the billdard-rooni of the Club in the evening 'before a large gathering. . The principal breaks by Mr Roberts during the game were 108, 92, 77, 60 and 52. Institute of Journalists has received a letter from Sir Joseph, Ward', acknowledging a copy of the report of t!he last general meeting of the Branch, at which reference was made to the assistance rendered by the Government', and) especially by Sir Joseph, dn connection with the itour through-' rthe colony, on the occasion' of the Royal visit, of the representatives of the English newspapers 1 . Sir Joseph concludes his letter: — "I can only say that I am amply repaid! if anything I did in any way added to < the enjoyment of the visit of your confreres of the Old Land."
