BURIED SUPPLIES.
DE LA REV DEFEATED. (Received S*pt. 13, 9.13 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 12. Colonel Barker discovered 7000 buried Martini cartridges at Braawiwater Baein, and immense quantities of grain concerted in caves. Lord Methuen defeated' Vantondwr and 1 De La Rey at Marico, killing eighteen and capturing forty- on*. A LETTER FROM CAPTAIN ANDRE.W. From a bivouac on Modder River Captain Andrew, of tba Sixth New Zealand Contingent, writes to a. friend in Chrisfcchuroh, under date August 2. The regiment on the trek, a week out from Bloemfontein, pitched their camp on the cite of one of Lo-rd Methuen'S big fights before the Magersfontein affair. En route the column had some slight skirmishing, und halted near Paardieberg, where Cronje surrendered, and at Magersfontein Hill the remains of the Boer defences were still to be seen, and also the graves of the Highlanders wjio fell in the fight. The officers tuid men of rtJie regiment were doing good work, and notwithstanding the hardships they were called on to undergo, they were in good health and spirits. The Officers and uoncorns, who joined from th© First, Second and Third, were applying for permission to re'turri to New Zealand at thd en-d of six months' service, they having understood that they were only signed on for that . period. Some were desirous of remaining on longer, and they had not applied to return. The . applicants , were— Captains Findlay, Caiaeron, Stevenson, and Harper, Lieutenants Tudor and Overton, Ser-geant-Major Hay, Sergeants Hawthorn, Pickett, and Mourie. Colonel Banks was on leave at Cape Town, and Lieutenants Crawford, Rose -and Williams, and Captain Storer were expecting Imperial commissions.
