DAIRYING IN NEW ZEALAND.
At the Joint Session of the Live Stock and Dairy Associations of Manitoba, held at the. end of March, in the City Hall, Winnipeg, Mr J. A. Ruddick, the Assistant Dairy Commissioner, Ottawa, delivered an address on " Dairying in New Zealand." "New Zealand dairymen," he said, " are ahead of nearly every other dairying country, milk not being bought by the quart or gallon, but tested by the Babcock test, and paid according to that. The quality of the milk is somewhat inferior to that of Canada, most of those engaged in the dairying not understanding farming as well as the Canadian does, and, consequently, the milk is affected by the feeding. Companies in New Zealand insist on having good men to manage their factories, and pay them according to their competency, and consequently many are settling down to this work, ihere is no such thing as a fixed scale of wages, amd those owning the factories do not insist on getting a man at a fixed wage and refuse to pay more," and this, Mr Ruddick | say?, the Canadian dairyman might profit-, j ably follow. Mr Ruddick, at the fif-tj teenth annual meeting of the Manitoba | Dairy Association, also expressed his opinion in favour of legislation to compel factories and makers to have their names branded on each package, and held that by this, the quality of the goods would be improved, and a better price be obtainable by those who created a name for themselves.
