THE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.
A STRIKE AVERTED

MELBOURNE, May 2.
Final arrangements have been completed for the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament. As members enter to take their seats the Old Hundredth will be sung with orchestral accompaniment. After the Duke of York has read 'his commission, opening Parliament, the "Hallelujah Chorus" will be given, the proceedings closing with "Rule Britannia" and the National Anthem. On ttie following afternoon, Earl Hopetoun will attend and deliver the Governor-General's speech.
The threatened strike of the Militia has been averted, the Federal Minister of Defence having conceded the men's demand for/ 8s a day. Sir Henry Parkes's two daughters will be amongst the honoured guests at the Commonwealth Parliament celebrations. The warships Haaisa, Noord, Brabant and Gromoboi have arrived for the celebrations.
