A PHILANTHROPIC MILLIONAIRE.
MR CARNEGIE'S GIFTS. Mr Andrew Carnegie, the well-known millionaire, has just presented £40,000 to tho public library of the City of Syracuse, New York State. With this contribution Mr Carnegie's benefactions in the cause of charity and public education now amount to over £2,000,000. This great sum has all been given within 'ten years, during which period, says the New York correspondent of the; " Daily Mail," Mr Carnegie's gifts to libraries, schools and universities have never been less than a million dollars a> year. Mr Carnegie is the author of a novel epigram :— " The man who dies rich dies disgraced," and is evidently bent on living up to his convictions. • J
