A KINDLY ACT-
" By some official oversight the widow of a trooper, whose husband died of enteric, did not receive a penny of the sustenance money due to herself and child for the first three month of her husband's service," writes a correspondent. " The bereaved woman, who is Still in her teens, wrote a personal appeal dto Lord Roberts that her case might receive his consideration. Within two or three days a reply was received from Lord Roberts's private secretary intimating that the amount dne would be forwarded by the paymaster im** mediately. " On the following day the sum of £5 2s pel arrived, to the surprise of /the poor Woman, who little thought that-\in the week Lord Roberts was so much engaged over the Royal funeral his lordship could attend to the application of a poor trooper's wife. "There is. a melancholy interest over a roughly -written item jn a little diary which the dead soldier carried, the entry being ' Passed Lord Robei'fs at B-oemlflonltein,' the nfan little thinking that in a few months 'Blobs * would be giving a kindly HiStem ing ear to his widow oq behalf of herself and chiia."
