Mining in the j^inety-mile Beach Slstrict lias evidently received considerable impetus of lite. Claims lave been taken up in many parts of Ihis long stretch of gold-beaTing formation. ■Attention hajj been^rawn to the TtnUaia River, and on T?eb.' 8 Mr F. Beverley will apply at the Warden's Court, Ashburton, for a prospecting license described in the Schedule as being in respect of a strip -of land 80 chains long *nd 62* chains wide, lying in the K'akaia Riverbed and along -the north bank. A. start lias been made "to bore the Greenstone Gold. Dredging Company's _claim. So far as can be ascertained, the results are highly satisfactory. The work is under the supervision of MiTacon. - Mr Powiclr, of Westport, is taking out a patent for vm automatic combined electric mercurial vibrating machine for treating 'black sand" for gold-saving purposes. If the patent is successful it will open up a big field, mow lying idle on the Coast, for, mining investment. The building of the Greenstone dredge pontoons ihas been commenced.' "^■GoEsiderable delay has taken place, as the <• company was floated and registered^over a year ago and !h«s called up three-fourtns of the capital. The claim is being prospected, and fcrie.bore is down 14ft, but -though the wash has^notbeen struck, some good prospects- have been "obtained. All (haste is being made with the work of erection of the Greenstone Junction mar chinery, all of which, is on board. The elevator and ladder are in position, and the buckets are being put on. The electric plant is now complete, and will be' forwarded immediately. The !]\ T e!son Creek dredge was supposed to have obtained a big return last week, but the directors refused permission 1o publish the returns. It. was not until some time after, that it was known that the return for the week ended Jan. 19 was 20oz of gold, as has been previously reported.
