"His assassin was Dr Duarte Pinto Coelho, a- lieutenant . in . the Guards i and tfoctor to the Royal! Horse.! He was married to a daughter of General Gueiroz, commander rf the Municipal Guards'^ who- is an intimate friend of the King. ,/ • Dr Oqelho was anonymously toid.thatt his young wife' had secretly met young : O'Neill, who was: twenty T twoi years of: age,: and one of . Coelhc's closest friend^ /EL& received tlu» : news on the day, of, a lawn "tennis match wfth the English^ officers, in \wnich he -was "playing:;- It was .noticed' that he had" to be called whenever, it -was his turil to play, and' that he was-watch-ing the stand where his wife sat .with., a group of the jeunesse doree, dncludSng U'Neill, around her. t ■■'-■■■:..' The doctor announced that he was *ha* night going to Opor'te, and pretended, .to do so. But 'he went instead to" a house wiere he :Was to!d the lovers met. His brother, Fernando Pinto C'pelho, id whom he had shown the anonymous letter, not believing 'his story of the journey 'to Oporto, went after him. He endeavoured, to lead him away and to convince him that his wife was innocent, but Dr Pinto Coelho said that he knew she was. there already, : and he had heard her voice. ; Such was the case. As soon as 'her husband had, as she supgosed'^ started for Oporto, Coelho*s wife had telephoned to young O'Neill, andl they joined each other at this place. Seeing that he could not_ dissuade his brother, Fernando hid in a doorway, and 1 when shortly afterwards Albert O'Neill' axwf a lady emerged, he rushed 1 out, seized her violently by tfhe arm, and ran d"own the stree'c with! her, so that the shot, aimed at her at the same moment 'by her ihus-. baho! did 'nc^'rea^Ti. ¥efr '^Thxs unfortunate O'Neill, however, came face to face unsuspectingly with the deceived 'husband, who fired twice at him, killing him instantaneously. ■-.-••■»: Great sorrow and sympathy are felt here for the three families. Margarita Guerioa Coelho is tweutv-ssven years of age, and has five little children. 'The General, her father, is dangerously ill since he learnt what has occurred, and 'has said that ifhis daughter ever appears in his presence he still possesses strength enough to her. • ' ', ■ ■ It us. said -that Dr Pinto CceSho will not bs: condemned, as Mr O'Neill, the father* will not prosecute.
