RAILWAY PLATFORMS.

The new regulation restricting the admission of the public to railway stations ie designed to remedy a defect in out railway system which 'has inflicted a great deal of discomfort on travellers by train. It provides that it shall not be lawful for any person to be on a railway platform fifteen minutes before or after the arrival of a train unless he is the holder of an admission ticket, for which a charge of twopence will be made. This regulation' will not be made continuous. It will only be put in force when occasion requires, and then' it will be enforced 1 strictly. It is likely-to work satisfactorily up to a certain point, but we are by no means oertajp that it will solve the difficulty completely. As long as it is enforced there will jbe no cause for complaint, but on the occasions when it ie not put into operation the subject will be as complicated as it was under the conditions which prevailed before the rules were altered. Either the stations will be overcrowded or people who (have urgent reasons for wishing to meet incoming trains will be debarred from doing so. A correspondent complains that he was refused admission to the Christchurch station on 1 Monday evening, although, 'he proffered l the twopence demanded under the new regulation, and explained to the attendants that business reasons of grave importance necessitated his being on the platform when the express arrived, and we think that he hats good grounds for thinking that he was badly treated.
