ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
DRINK AND A BOOTLACE.
JOHN BURKE O'BRIEN SENTENCED TO THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. •
At the 'Lyttelton Magistrate's Court today, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., John Burke O'Brien, who, on Jan. 8, had tried to strangle himself with his shirt and bootlaces in the Lyteltoh lock-up, was charged with attempted suicide. He pleaded " Not guilty with any intention of committing suicide." He was, he said, very much under the influence of liquor>, and "had hardly any recollection of the transaction." Sergeant Rutledge described the man's attempt at self-destruction. The accused begged that the term of a month, which he is serving for 'habitual drunkenness, might not be extended, and made pro r fuse promises of reform. Mr Smaill said that lie was prepared to take. O'-Brien into the Samaritan. Home on his discharge. Mr Bishop passed a sentence of three months' imprisonment, net to take effect as long as the accused remained in the Home.
