THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
♦ MR ARTHUR RHODES ASKED TO STAND FOR CHRISTOHURCH. • An influential deputation waited upon Mr A. E. G. Rhodes yesterday, and presented ihim with the following requisition : — " We, ithe undersigned citizens of Christchurch, recognising in you a native of the place, and one who, by his sterling qualities and busi'nesa capacity, has gained the esteem of all sections of the community, respectfully request you to allow yourself to be nominated for the high position of the Mayor of Ohrist'church for the ensuing year. Should you .accede to our request, we promise you our hearty support in assisting to place you in a position that we feel convinced you will fill with credit to yourself and the citizens." •The requisition, though drafted only a shorfc time before it was presented to Mr Rhodes, bore the signatures of a large number of in all walks of life, and representative of all shades of politics. Mr Rhodes, in reply to the deputation, said that he warmly appreciated the compliment that .had been paid to him, and! would highly value the honour of serving his fellow-citi-zens in tho Council ; but ho could not give a definite answer without taking some time to consider the matter. He would communicate with tho members of t3xe deputation in tho course of a day or two, and in tho meantime wished to thank the gentlemen who had signed the requisition for their ■flattering expressions of good-will and confidence
