ENTERTAINMENTS.

On tihe evening of May 11 a grand Maori entertainment was given in the Fernside Sclioolroom by a troupe from the Maori pa, under the conductorsbip of Mr D. Cossgrove. Mr D. Buddo presided. There was a very large attendance of residtehts and- of many visitors from a distance. An amusing and interesting programme was well carried out, all the items being enthupiastically applauded, and many of them being encored. Greatinterest was taken in the fcakas, and the concert was successful in every respect. The proceeds will go to help the Bath Fund and the War Fund," and as there is now no debt on the swimming bath, a balance of £4 or £5 will be serit to the War Fund. At the opening of the season of the Fernside Mutual Improvement Society on Friday evening, Mr Buddo, M.H.R., who presided, delivered an address on the subject of " The Leading Events in the Empire During the Year." He referred specially to ( ths Indian famine, the Ottawa fire, the plague and the war, and showed that lessons could be learnt. from thos^ events. Officers were elected at the meeting, and twenty-three members were enrolled. , ' On May 10 a successful concert was held in the Athenaeum Hall at Okain's Bay, in aid of the Church Vicarage Fund. Despite the very inclement weather, the hall was comfortably filled, and those present enjoyed a pleasamt evening. The Rev H. Knowlefc, who occupied the chair, gave some very interesting views by the aid of a magic lantern. Vocal and instrumental items were given., and after the concert, a dance was held, and was kept up till the small Ihours of .the morning. The LinWood Club held the first of its monthly " socials "on Friday evening. The Captain (Mr A. Hobbs) occupied the x chair, and a large number of members attended. Songs were sung by Messrs S. Orchard, R. L. Busch, C. Goggin, G. Bush, Garlick, C. \ H. Fox and others, and a recitation was I given by Mr Ryan. During the interval light refreshments were handed round. The entertainment closed with the singing of " Auld Lang Syne."
