In consequence of these, refusals he had arranged (subject to the approval of th& Board) for a lamp to be erected which will be lighted with acetylene gas by a resident. It was estimated that the cost of the acetylene light would be cheaper than that of gas at the present rates charged. The Board approved of the proposal, subject to the residents- interested contributing, towards the purchase of the lamp posfy and also agreed to defray the annual cost of lighting. The matter was left in the hands of the Chairman and Clerk, with. power to act. A company is being formed in Ohristchurch to take up the manufacture of a new road sweeper, which has been invented by Mr H. J. Ranger. Working models of the contrivance'liave been constructed, and have met with the approval of the City Surveyor, who says that the machine should be a most valuable addition to the present stock of street machines, as it will not only save time,' but will also be efficient in. its -work, and its working expenses will reduce the cost of removal of the debris by at least the cost of one horse and one man. It is claimed for the machine, that it will effect a great saving in manual labour, and a saving of 50 per cent in horse-power ; that it is a self-contained machine capable of being attached to tie rear of any cart; -that it does not require an extra horse, the horse in the cart being capable of drawing the cart and the sweeper, while the latter discharges direct into the cart ; that it will treat either mud or dust in a similar manner, and elevate both into the cart ; that it will also gather and pick up loose stones ; that it leaves no ridges or objectionable, heaps on the roadway ; and that it can be worked by one man and one horse.
