THE THIRD CONTINGENT.

THE LYTTELTON DEMONSTRATION. A meeting of the Lyttelton Committee in connection with the farewell demonstration at the departure of the Third New Zealand Contingent was held in the Borough Council Chamber yesterday evening. There was ft Urgfc attendance, and the Mayor, Mr W. Radcliffe, presided. The honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr G. A. Lewirt, presented a « interim balance-sheet, showing that the receipts in connection with the demonstration had been £220, including £160 from the railway, £.!0 collected by a number of young todies, nvni £30. takings on the s.s. The estimated expenses would amount to about £169, leaving a credit balance fo upwards of £50.

Mr Colin Cook, on behalf of the Marine Procession Committee, reported that about 6000 people had been carried on the Union Steamship Company's steamers on the daV of the demonstration, and the fares had amounted to rather more than £300. Between £40 and £50 had been expended in insuring the passengers on the steamers, leaving about £250, which would be handed to ill» Committee to supplement the Lyttelton contribution to the War Fund. Mr White, for the Art Union Committee, reported that the three pictures painted by Mr M'M'illan had been completed, and would be on vie.w in Mr J. T. Brice's shop at Lytteltati, and afterwards in Chritchurcb. THe Art Union Committee was empowered to make arrangements for the drawing. It was decided that the accounts should be referred to the executive for settlement, with instructions to pay over the balance remaining to the Canterbury War Fund. The question of making a presentation to the honorary secretary was referred to the executive, the Mayor and several others of the committee paying a high tribute to the energy and ability with which Mr Lewin had discharged his duties. : It was decided to send letters of thanks to the Ladies' Committee, the Union Steamship Company, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, Messrs Pitcaithly, Wallace and Co and Messrs Agar and Thomas for the assistance which they had rendered on the occasion of the demonstration.
