A FULL COMPANY OF 106 OFFICERS AND MEN TO BE SENT. . In view of tho gravity of the situation in South Africa and the fact that 600 (six hundred) applications have been received from suitable men willing to volunteer, the . War Fund Committee has definitely decided to provide, equip and transport to South Africa three divisions of thirty-two mounted men each — in all &6 men — with the necessary officers. Thus the Canterbury Troop will constitute a complete company in itself. The committee confidently relies upon the Canterbury public to provide the additional funds required, It is now fully recognised by the British Generals that colonial mounted men accustomed to rough work are invaluable for ■ scouting and outpost work in the Boer war. . It is further recognised that the quickest way of bringing the war to an end, and so lessening the terrible loss of life, j s to put an overwhelming British force into the field ,By putting an end to the war, less money will be needed to help the widows,' the orphans, and the wounded. Canterbury has determined to assist our Motherland by providing and equipping a troop of first-class horsemen, confidently relying upon the ever generous and loyal public of this province to assist: (a) By subscribing to the "War Fund," to provide the money, necessary to equip our men. (b) By presenting suitable horses to ! mount our men efficiently. (c) By sending the committee supplies of oats and fodder, consigned to the "War Fund," National Mortgage Stores, Addington. WM.
