According to the Commissiojier's report* the prisoners received into English gaols last year numbered 160,059, besides 1394 courtmartial prisoners and 10,873 civil prisoners, such as debtors. The average daily population of the prisons was 14,957. Increased provisions are made for the education of prisoners. Debtors now have to work, and are no longer- allowed to have beer and food V from the outside. Last year there was a /urther decrease in serious crime, which amounted to only 2£ per 100,000 of the population. The largest steel shaft in the world has just been finished. It is 27ft lOin long,, ana its diameter in the middle is 37in.
