THE WEATHER.
[Per Phess Association.'] INVERCARGILL, Dec. 4. There was an extraordinary downpour of rain between eight o'clock last night and 11 a.m. to-day. Creeks and rivers rose rapidly, and the l'ailway service is out of joint, the express from Dunedin not being expected to get through before midnight, while the train from Kingston is fast between two breaks near Five Rivers. No train can be run on the Tapanui line, while at Waikaka, Waipahi and Artherton passengers had to be transferred owing to washouts. There are also serious damages on branch lines. Beyond the delay, passengers were not much inconvenienced by the stoppage of trains, as means were taken to bring them on. The rivers are very high, and are likely to rise still higher. From Garston, on the Mataura, at 3 p.m. it was reported to be the biggest flood since 1878. Rain was still falling heavily in the afternoon up-country, and losses of stock seem inevitable.
