THE "CANTERBURY TIMES."

4 The pictorial pages of the " Canterbury Times " this week are full of interest. The Tran-tva-al .war conititutes a prominent feature, and 'the pictures include some instructive examples of -architecture in Soufch Africa. There are the Eadzaal or Government Buildings, which constitute the pride of Pretoria, the Post Office at Johannesburg (a fine block of buildings), and the officers' quartets in the main barracks at Capetown. That a charming bit of scenery may be found in a battlefield is exemplified in the case of Krugersdorp, and a glimpse of the Krokodil River, where a Boer 'laager was established, is a pretty scene. The Charlestown Tunnel at Lading's Nvk, tlie graves of officers at the 'base of Majuba Hill, the New South Wales Lancers on parade, the landing of troops at Durban, the sharpening of swords- at Aldershot — these are among the subjects depicted. And well-known artists eupply such pictures as "Jealousy" and "Gentle Persuasion," which have to do with the handling of troopship horses, and are effectively treated. The Floral Fete at Christchufch is illustrated by four photographs from the camera of Mr F. B. Hughes, and there are portraits of notable men — the Hon John M'Kenzie, whose" return to New' Zealand has been so heartily welcomed, the late Mr sentation plate accompanies the issue. The world-known shipowner. A very fine presentation plate accompanies the issue. The subject, which' is gaculiar^- apropos at the moment, and -which has been reproduced from an oW engraving by the erpres3 permission of the owner, is "An Election a Hundred Years Ago." Quaintly humorous is" this picture, which will be found to be just the thing for framing. This week's "Canterbury Times" is a 'thoroughly good example of up-to-date journalism.
