THE GRAIN MARKET.
A large number of fanners were in town on Saturday, and the chances of the grain markets were eagerly discussed. Although a goad many had samples of newly-threshed wheat and oats, which they were submitting to merchants, they w»re hi nearly ev^ry case so firm in their demands for prices much above ruling quotations that little or no business was done. The news of a further order of 5000 tons of jnixed produce for the Transvaal Ihas caused holders to think that still further supplies will, be required if the -war is of a lengthy duration, and this has caused them to handea their demands considerably. The exports of produce from Lyttelton last week included the following :— 30,086 sacks wheat, 1955 sacks, 1176 bags and 460 cases flour, 10,529 sacks oats, 85 sacks meal, 803 sacks barley, 2238 sacks and 70 tanks malt, 2573 sacks chaff, 1047 sacks bran, 73 vsacks sharps, 864 sacks pollard, 192 sacks seed, 61 sacks peas, 633 bales hay, 3099 sacks and 9 bags potatoes, 7 sacks onions, and 161 sacks carrots.
