A STORY OF THE CHATHAMS.

In relating the account of his visit to the Chathams in 1866, ]\lr J. Brooking, formerly a member of the Forest Rangers, tells an interesting incident. When he arrived there in the St Kilda, a whaling barque was stranded on the beach at Waitangi. The captain had died at sea, and the mate, an intemperate man, had run her ashore. The vessel had first stranded on the other side of the island, and when she was gob off and brought round to Waitangi by a pilot, the mate induced the crew to slip the cable, hoisted some of the sails, and sailed her up on to the beach. There she lay for some time, until she was put up to auction and purchased by a Dunedin man. The latter would have nothing to do with the drunken mate, but engaged the best of the crew and got the vessel off and repaired her. The mate, who prior to the arrival of the troops bad fairly taken possession of the island, in revenge chopped the hawser by which the barque was swinging to a kedge anchor, and she- drifted ashore and broke up.
