THE CONDITION OF JOHANNESBURG.
STARVATION IN VIEW. Several men who returned to. Melbourne a ifew days ago from South Africa by the Aberdeen steamer Australasian, said that the stores in Johannesburg were, when they left about a month ago, almost depleted of provisions, as" the principal merchants, in anticipation of the outbreak of ' hostilities, had kept their local stocks very low, but, -.whilst this was the case, tlxe stores on the coast were simply full of all descriptions of food stuffs. They anticipated that distress would be very great in Johannesburg, and that thousands of people would be on the brink of starvation. Asked why. under these circumstances, there had j)ot.l>se£ a jnpre general exodus, they replied that far more people would 'have left the' town- than bas been- tlie case, but that they could riot get away ow- j ing to the want of nteatis. For some' tima 1 past a- vast amount of money has been spent I in Johannesburg in alleviating distress, but as every day of late the situation has be- ' come more acute the extent of suffering j must now have assumed alarming propor- I tions. .
