Roddick, one of the South Canterbury football team, who was injured during the match last Thursday, and has since been ■under treatment in a private hospital, is improving rapidly, and will probably be able to return home on Thursday. • At a meeting of the City Council last night a councillor, when ' speaking on the subject of roads, said, "Mr Archer — to give the devil his dve — has done his level* best." The City Surveyor, who was present, smilingly acknowledged the compliment. A correspondent states that the resolution passed at theaneeting of the supporters of Messrs G. J. Suiith and T. E. Taylor on Saturday nijjht, in favour of securing their re-election, also included the name of Mr H. G. EU as a candidate for the third Ghristchuriii seat. Councillor Payling said, last night at the meeting of the City Council, that he had always been a consistent . advocate for higher wages to the hospital porters. At Kaiapoi, yesterday, before Mr Bishop, BVM., a number of applications for old age pensions were heard. Six were granted in full, one for £14 per year, and another lyas adjourned for proof of age and residence. Strong representations are now being made to the Railway Department by shippers of produce at Timaru respecting the need for the employment of more trucks, an additional shunting engine, and more men, for the work at the wharves. During the past month Messrs Stringer and Cresswell, acting for the Railway Department, have settled amicably a number of claims for damages to persons injured in the Rakaia railway accident, and up to the present claims amounting 'to about £10,000 have been compromised for £2500. Mr John Jackson, of Timaru, who was appointed by the Government to a seat on the Canterbury College Board of Governors, sent in his resignation at yesterday's meeting of the ' Board. He explained that it was very inconvenient for him to come up from Timaru to attend the meetings, . and as he could only bo present occasionally, he felt that he was keeping someone else from occupying the seat who could give the work more attontion. . . . At a, meeting of the committee of the Moderation League held yesterday, Mr S. S. Blackburne resigned his seat on the committee, as he could not see his way to approve of the axhnission of liquor-traders to the League. At a general meeting of the League he had 11 - proposed that both liquortraders and prohibitionists should be excluded, but a, majority of the members decided that liquor-traders should be admit bed.
