MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
: « The usual meeting of the St Michael's Temperance Society was held in. the schoolroom, Durham Street, on Wednesday evening. There was a fair attendance, and the Rev A. C. Fraer occupied the chair. Songs and recitations were given successfully by Miss Jessie Kemp, 'Mr M'Keown, Miss Milly Laverty, Mj3s Flossie Coombs, Miss Nelly Teague, Miss Alice Gray, Miss Cissy Froggefcfc and Miss (Jowan. ■'JLiie be' Aibuns Musical and Literary Society spent a very enjoyable Parliamentary evening at its last meeting, when the Governor's Speech was dealt with. The members of the Cabinet, etc., were: — Speaker, Rev W. Lee ; Premier and Minister of Justice, • Mr C. E. Salter; Colonial Treasurer, Mr C. Chaplin ; Minister of Railways, Mr W. Hindie; Minister •of Education and Labour, Mr G. Simpson ; Minister of Native Affairs and Public Works, Rev A. B. ChapeU ; Minister of Lands and Defence, Mr H. Heslop ; Leader of Opposition, Mr Dixon; Clerk of the House, Mr C. Hobbs. lhe monthly meeting of the Tai Tapu Band of Hope was held yesterday afternoon. Mr J. W. Miller, the president, occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance. A duet was sung by Miss E. and Master W. Parrett ; a. reading was given by Mr JR. Gardiner ; recitations by Mary Lowe, Lily Hellewell and Ronald Voss. Two part songs were sung by several children trained by Mr J. Voss, the solos being taken by Bessie Brake, Belle Limbrick, Ruby Voss, William Parrett, Leonard Peryman, Harry Wills, Bertram Marshall and David Griffiths; Miss Bishop presided at the organ. An interesting temperance address was given, by Mr H. Bennetts. There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Cust Friendship Guild, held on: Friday evening. Li the absence, through indisposition, of the president, the chair was occupied by Mr Hassall, who read an interesting paper on the " Efficacy of Prayer," contributed by the Rev F. Stubbs. Several speakers took part in the discussion which, followed. •At a meeting of the Tai Tapu Mutual Improvement Society, held last week, there was a fair attendance. Mr J. Voss. .occupied the chair. The editor, Mr Robert Macartneyj read the contributions to the "' Journal," and a discussion ensued on each item. Five new members were elected. The auarterly meeting of the Leithfield Lodge, M.U., was held on. Saturday evening, N.G. Bro D. Palmer presiding. Certificates were received from the Lodge Surgeon declaring two brothers on the sick fund, and the sick visitors reported on another case. An offer was received from a number of members guaranteeing half the cost of a piano, provided thut the total cost did not exceed. £60. Tt was resolved to accept the of^r. The Secretary was instructed to write i». the Society informing it that as the Mutual Improvement Class was started by the Lodge with a view of increasing the member ship and' attendance of the Lodge, it does not consider it advisable to change the night of meeting, but in future will open the Lodge at 7 p.m. so that the room might be available earlier. P.G. Bro B. M'Namara, V.G. : and P.G. Bro John Fitzpatrick, E.S. A hearty vote, of thanks was accorded to the outgoing officers and responded to. It was decided to confer upon the Past G.M. Bro G. Bruire the purple degree, and to place his name on the merit board, also .to present him with a framed certificate of office. The Cust Band of Hope was re-opened at the Cust Oddfellows' Hall on Friday. The chair was occupied by Mr A. D. Hassall, and about sixty members were present. It was decided to hold meetings lortnightly. Master N. Forbes was appointed secretary and Master Frank Early treasurer. A good programme of musical items was provided, in which Mrs Stubbs, Misses White, Lee, Robb, Hassall, and Masters G. Lee, N. Forbes, G. Ruddenklau, E. Spencer, H. M'Cutchen, W. Lee, Douglas M'Kie and David M'Kee took part.
